Samsung aims to unify home appliances, TVs, smartphones and smartwatches through a single service

Samsung is looking to take advantage of its presence across the breadth of consumer electronics categories with its new Smart Home service, announced today. The electronics giant aims to make home automation easier for owners of its range of smartphones, smartwatches, TVs and white goods, with a single app able to connect home appliances and mobile devices.

The company says it plans to expand the service into home security and energy management in future. As well as enabling smartphones to control and check up on appliances, the service will allow users to control smart appliances in other novel ways —

With the Samsung Smart Home app, people can control multiple devices simultaneously. For example, a user can simply say “Good Night” to the TV remote control, and connected devices within the home such as the Smart Bulb and air conditioners could be set-up to automatically turn off.

Samsung says the smartphone app will be available on Google Play and Samsung apps, as well as its Tizen-powered Gear 2 smartwatches. A separate app for the company’s 2014 Smart TVs will launch later this month. The initial launch will be in the U.S. and Korea, with other countries to follow.
