The Motorola Droid is a beast of a phone, no two ways about it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider a case to help protect it. After the break, we take a look at the Otterbox Commuter Series case.
Otterbox is a name synonymous with protection. And I used to think that meant some hulking rubber-and-plastic enclosure that would ensure by phone’s protection by ensuring I’d never take it out of my pocket. But what it comes to the Commuter Series case for the Motorola Droid, boy, was I wrong.
The case is made up of two simple pieces of plastic — one for the slide-up screen, the other for the body of the Droid. And the two simply snap on. While it’s easy to tell which way to snap on the body case, you’ll want to double-check the screen’s half. There’s a small opening at the bottom for the main microphone. (There’s also an opening for the secondary, noise-canceling mic on the back, of the phone, too. That’s something that we’ve seen missing in other cases.)
There’s also a plastic-film screen protector (optional, of course, but we’re talking about total protection here), and it comes with a microfiber cloth and plastic squeegee to make sure no dust or air bubbles get in your way.
The case meets the phone with a sort of rubber gasket, and there are flaps for the microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The volume and power buttons work just fine with the case on, and the screen’s slider mechanism isn’t hampered in the least. Do note that despite all the rubber, the case is in no way meant to be waterproof. That should go without saying, but we’re saying it anyway. The case doesn’t come off easily, but it’s not overly difficult, either. Best way to describe it is you’re not afraid it’s going to pop off.
Best part about all this protection is that it doesn’t really add that much bulk to the phone. OK, it got a little bigger, but that’s to be expected. And available now for $32.95 in the Android Central store, a little extra bulk is worth the price of protection.
