VoLTE and new software features highlight a refreshed Optimus G Pro
LG has just put out information on its latest handset for the Korean market, the LG GX. This phone seems to be more of a lateral move from the LG Optimus G Pro, highlighting some new network and software features inside of a slightly redesigned case. Announced on the LG U+ network, the LG GX supports new LTE bands and technology as well as VoLTE (Voice over LTE), something that’s becoming more standard in the Korean market.
Beyond the networking, LG is talking up the new software features available. The first is “Smart Day,” which shows more glanceable information on the lock screen than on previous LG devices. Next, you have “Media Time,” a quick way to access media directly from the lock screen, as well as launch automatically when plugging in headphones.
Further, you have new automatic car dock mode, including a new navigation interface and voice controls while driving. When you’re back at home, the LG GX can link up with your LG TV to show calls, texts and other information on your TV screen, even when the phone isn’t with you.
On the hardware side, we’re basically looking at your standard mid-2013 specs. The aforementioned new LTE specs are there, along with a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 13MP camera, 5.5-inch 1080p display and 3140mAh removable battery.
Design-wise, it looks a bit like a mash-up an LG G2 and an Optimus G Pro, with standard side-mounted buttons, a plastic shell with metal accents and a physical home button with a capacitive navigation button on either side. It’s hard to shake the feeling from both hardware and design that this is basically a warmed-over G Pro, with some of the latest software features from the G2 and elsewhere.
The LG GX looks to be launching specifically with LG U+ in Korea, and we wouldn’t count too much on it being released anywhere else beyond that at this point.
