Recon Instruments’ new Android-powered HUD glasses, dubbed the “Recon Jet” have sold out before the first pre-order period ended at $499 each. These early “Pilot Edition” models went on sale for $100 off retail price to entice early adopters over to the platform, and the plan seems to have worked. Even though these shipments aren’t expected until December of this year, pre-orders are all sold out.
Because of the high demand, Recon Instruments has decided to open up another pre-order period at the retail price of $599. This next batch of devices will be sold on a first come, first serve basis and won’t ship until February 2014 but will still get to early adopters before the devices hit store shelves officially. Pilot Edition Sells Out Early
22nd July 2013, Vancouver – Recon Instruments, the award winning technology company behind the world’s first consumer Heads-up Displays (HUD) for sports, launched Recon Jet, their high-performance HUD integrated on sports sunglasses,less than a month ago. The Pilot Edition, which rewarded first movers with a $100 discount and early shipment, experienced huge demand and sold out in advance of its scheduled pre-sale period.
The Pilot Edition, which will ship several months prior to full production, has experienced astonishing demand. However, it’s not too late to secure a model before spring training kicks off. Based on the success of the Pilot Edition, the company has decided to release another early batch of Recon Jet shipping in February 2014. Pre-orders for these limited quantity, early release units are now accepted on a ‘first come, first serve basis’ for $599 at jet.reconinstruments.com.
Recon Jet will ship with applications specially designed for cyclists and triathletes. Through wireless connectivity to third party devices (via ANT+ and Bluetooth), the athlete will have access to critical information including heart rate, cadence and power output. Its comprehensive suite of on-board sensors also delivers a full portfolio of precision performance stats and data such as speed, pace, distance, time, vertical ascent and more.
Recon Jet keeps the user connected to friends and family effortlessly by displaying caller ID and text messages hands-free and available at a glance. Athletes can even upload and view information from their social networks directly from Recon Jet during activity, seamlessly and hands free.
While Recon Jet is designed with athletic use cases in mind, it also has an open platform. Recon will introduce the Recon Jet SDK well before the first Recon Jets begin to ship, allowing developers to create applications for any activity. Recon is already in development with major health and fitness companies to create native apps to run on Jet, which will be available to upload to the device. Through these apps, users will be able to unlock the full potential of the platform and customize their Jet for any activity where information, relayed direct-to-eye, changes the game.

Recon Jet includes a 1 GHz dual core processor, dedicated graphics, Wi-Fi, ANT+, Bluetooth, GPS, HD camera, and a comprehensive suite of sensors making it a standalone computing solution, comparable in capability to a tablet or smartphone. The components of the HUD are distributed evenly across the eyewear adding just 14grams to each side of the sunglasses. The display is controlled by a precision optical touch-pad that supports multiple gesture controls and facilitates its use in all weather conditions, even with gloves on.
