The fantastic fingerprint sensors in the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X have been a revelation when it comes to simplicity of unlocking your phone, keeping apps secure and authenticating payments, and it turns out a lot of Nexus users have jumped on board. Speaking at the 3rd Annual Google Security Update session at Google I/O 2016, Stephan Somogyi from Google dropped an interesting statistic on us — since the launch of the Nexus 6P and 5X, 90% of Nexus users have a secure lock screen on their phone.

Prior to the launch of these phones, secure lock screen usage was only hovering at about 50% amongst Nexus users, despite features like Smart lock that hoped to entice the use of a secure lock screen while keeping the simplicity of having your phone unlock with a swipe in some situations. Such a dramatic bump up to 90% secure lock screen usage isn’t entirely surprising considering how easy the Nexus 6P and 5X fingerprint sensors are to use, but the quick change in user behavior is fantastic to see.

The Nexus user response to having a fingerprint sensor closely follows the usage pattern that Apple saw when it introduced the easy-to-use Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone. And in both cases, the more people that use fingerprint security and lock screens on their phones, the better.
