From the Editor’s Desk: Back to the land of the living

The thing about trade shows is that you know there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to come down with something afterward. Between the travel and being crammed into a venue with 50,000 or so people for a week, germs happen. But, man, the post-show plague got me good this year following Mobile World Congress. Fortunately, I’m back to the land of the living. And it’s a working weekend, too, as you might have guessed. We’ve got the HTC One in our hot little hands, and Samsung is doing its thing Thursday night in New York City.

As my man Short Round once said, “No time for love, Dr. Jones.” Let’s get to it. A few thoughts on a few things:

  • We’re trying to balance a proper review of the HTC One with your unquenched thirst for anything HTC One, believe me. There’s a lot to like about this phone. But there’s a bit we need to get our heads wrapped around.
  • Is the HTC One some revolutionary new device? I don’t think I’d go that far. But it’s really, really good.
  • And a really, really good device by itself won’t change HTC’s financial situation. That’s a long-term, strategic thing.
  • Still trying to decide what to expect from Samsung this week. I’m praying for some sort of updated UI. Bells and whistles are a given. A larger display, too. I really want to see Samsung step it up in the design department.
  • If you’re in New York City on Thursday night and can get near Times Square, I’d try to do so. I’ve got a feeling Samsung’s going to paint the town.
  • Is this the year we see IR blasters in every device? Do we care?

OK, back to work. BTW, that picture above was taken by Alex Dobie as we wondered La Ramblas our last night in Barcelona. Such an interesting city. Can’t wait to go back next year.
