Calling abroad? Traveling? Need to call Canada from the US? T-Mobile has you covered!

T-Mobile boasts pretty extensive international coverage, especially across North America. If you’re wanting to call between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, there are some plans that make life very easy for you. If you want to call abroad, they’ve got plans that give you unlimited calling to landlines in more than 70 countries and mobile lines in more than 30.

It all boils down to your needs and two other things: using your phone within North America and using your phone outside of North America. Here we go.

Using your phone within North America

T-Mobile has their Simple Choice Plans, which can give you unlimited talk, text, and 4G LTE in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. All you have to do is upgrade your plan or add a $10 feature to your current monthly bill, which adds Canada and Mexico.

When you’re traveling from one to the other, you can just use your phone normally, without worrying about ridiculous international rates. Just mind your data cap, since that still applies no matter where you are. So long as T-Mobile has LTE coverage wherever you’re going, you’ll get it. In area where it doesn’t, your speeds may be slowed to 3G or even 2G.

Calling to outside North America works similarly in that it’s a simple add-on to your monthly bill. $10 per month gets you unlimited calling to landlines more than 70 countries and discounted rates to all numbers in more than 200 countries. $15 per month gets you everything you get for $10, plus you get unlimited calling to mobile lines in more than 30 countries.

Using your phone outside of North America

Traveling outside North America? T-Mobile has a plan for you. They offer plans with unlimited data and texting and calling for only 20 cents, per minute, in over 140 countries.

Sounds great, right? There’s kind of a catch.

That unlimited data? It’s not LTE; it’s 2G or 3G, depending on the country. If you want full speed data, you’ll have to pay the following:

  • $15 for 100MB of data to use for one day, speeds reduced to 2G afterward
  • $25 for 250MB of data to use for seven days, speeds reduced to 2G afterward
  • $50 for 500MB of data to use for 14 days, speeds reduced to 2G afterward

You also have to have a Simple Choice plan with unlimited data to have it included. Otherwise, it’s $15, per MB, 50 cents a text, and $1.49, per minute of calling. Also, if you don’t have a domestic texting plan, every text you receive will cost you 20 cents.

Watch out

Before traveling and using a ton of data and calling home for an hour every night, double-check your plan; otherwise, you could be in for a massive bill.

Also, the data speeds you do get, even with a data pass, will depend on the country you’re in and your phone’s radio bands.
