What is a family plan?
A family wireless plan typically allows two or more phones to share data and calling minutes between them. The cost for data and minutes is paid as a single monthly charge, but typically there is a network access fee that you pay for every phone on the plan.
What is AT&T’s family plan?
AT&T’s version of the family plan is called the Mobile Share Value plan. As the name implies, you share data across all of the devices on the plan. Calling minutes are not shared because unlimited domestic calling and texting is included.
Additionally, if you purchase a plan with 15GB or more of shared data, you get unlimited international texting from the United States to 120+ countries.
How much data can you get on the AT&T family plan?
You can buy data in buckets on the Mobile Share Value plan. They start as low as 300MB and go up from there:
- 300MB: $20
- 2GB: $30
- 5GB: $50
- 15GB: $100
- 20GB: $140
- 25GB: $175
- 30GB: $225
- 40GB: $300
- 50GB: $375
If you go over your data limit, how much AT&T charges you depends on the amount of data you’ve bought. For the 300MB plan, you’re charged $20 per 300MB over the limit. For all other plans, you’re charged $15 for every 1GB over the limit.
Unlimited data is available if you also have DirecTV.
How many phones can I have on an AT&T family plan?
You can have up to 10 devices on the Mobile Share Value plan. You’re not limited to just smartphones – you can have other types of devices as well:
- Tablets, gaming and connected devices: $10 per month.
- Laptops, netbooks, and hotspot devices: $20 per month.
- AT&T Wireless Home Phone: $20 per month.
- AT&T Wireless Home Phone and Internet: $30 per month.
What are the access charges?
In addition to the data charges, AT&T also charges you a network access fee for every phone you add to your plan. Like the data overage fees, the access fee amount depends on how much data you have purchased:
- 5GB or less: $25, per line.
- 15GB or more: $15, per line.
Are there any additional charges?
Taxes, both federal and state apply. There are other various charges, too, such as universal service charges and regulatory cost recovery fees.
Another cost is the phone subsidy through AT&T Next, if you’re financing a phone. This charge adds from $10 to $40 to your bill every month, per phone financed.
Is a family plan right for me?
If you’ve got kids that text, stream, and play mobile games on their phones, then you should consider a family plan because it will save you money, especially in the higher data buckets.
