Intel is moving forward with its plans to place a version of its RealSense 3D camera inside an Android smartphone. As part of its CES 2016 announcements, the company has begun taking pre-orders for its RealSense Smartphone Developer Kit. The 6-inch smartphone, which also supports Google’s Project Tango 3D scanning camera technology, is priced at $399.
Intel first announced its plans to team up with Google to bring its RealSense camera technology to smartphones in August during the Intel Developer Forum event. The dev kit includes a smartphone with an Intel Atom x7-Z8700 processor, 2GB orf RAM and 64GB of storage, along with an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. Of course, the unique feature on this phone is the Intel RealSense Camera ZR300, which supports the Project Tango 3D scanning technology.
The phone is being marketed strictly for app developers who want to create software that works with the RealSense camera and Project Tango. It is only available in the US at the moment and there’s no word on when Intel will begin shipping the dev kits.
