Verizon has announced that it will roll out Wi-Fi calling to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge beginning December 8. The feature — dubbed Advanced Calling — will be enabled via a software update, which will be rolled out in phases.
Through Wi-Fi calling, customers can place calls to U.S. numbers for free, while international calls will be charged at long distance rates. From Verizon:
When a customer uses Advanced Calling on our 4G LTE network and travels outside of coverage, the call will seamlessly transfer to a known Wi-Fi hotspot when available.
Additional phones on Verizon’s network will receive the functionality through software updates that will begin rolling out early next year. No word as yet on what handsets will be targeted by the carrier, but we’ll share more details as we receive them.
If you’re using a Galaxy S6 or S6 edge on Verizon, watch out for the update hitting later this week.
