Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are two of the biggest stars on the planet, but who reigns supreme? One is poised to become one of the most powerful anti-heroes in the DC Extended Universe. The other is Groot. It’s hard to say who’ll win, but their rivalry seems to be heating up in the wake of their alleged Fate of the Furious beef. The next frontier: pop music.
Vin Diesel recently released a remixed version of Selena Gomez and Kygo’s new single “It Ain’t Me” on Facebook. His version is… not great, but when the original track is already being called a banger, becoming a featured guest only days after the single’s release is a pretty good look. “I stepped out of my comfort zone for this one,” Diesel admitted on his Instagram. “Thank you Kygo for producing this 2017 HIT! Thank you for believing in me enough to ask me to sing.”
Meanwhile, The Rock, if you recall, belted out a few bars in last year’s Moana for “You’re Welcome,” a song written and composed in part by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s not the strongest performance either, but the bona fides are there. And damn if it isn’t adorable.
What does Vin Diesel working with Kygo on a Selena Gomez track have to do with The Rock singing in a Disney movie? Probably nothing! But, after Johnson reportedly called Diesel an unprofessional “candy ass” on Facebook, it’s easy (and fun!) to imagine the two taking subtle digs at each other in any way they can. (Even if all this is done to promote the next Furious movie, but hey.) And it’s not like the art is suffering. Both stars are pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and into the musical zone pretty much at the same time and for our enjoyment, making it so much harder to pick who’s the best beefy superstar with a geeky streak.
