Mozilla cancelled Firefox 64.0 Stable for Android because of a crash bug that it discovered; the organization plans to release Firefox 64.0.1 later this week.
Mozilla published Firefox 64.0 to the Stable channel yesterday. Usually, that means that the new version of Firefox is made available for all supported desktop operating systems and for Android.
This time, however, Firefox did not drop for Android. Firefox users who run the browser on Android devices may have noticed that Mozilla did not release the update to Firefox 64.0 for the operating system.
Update for apps on Android are rolled out over time but that has not been the case this time. A quick check on Firefox’s Google Play listing confirms that: November 13, 2018 is listed as the last update date on the page.
Mozilla decided to cancel the update for Android because of a crash bug according to a bug listing on Bugzilla@Mozilla.
Listed two months ago, it was discovered last week that the bug that caused the crash in Firefox for Android was showing up in version 64.0.
Mozilla engineers fixed the issue already. The organization plans to build Firefox 64.0.1 this week and distribute it as the new version of Firefox to all devices running stable versions of the browser.
Firefox 64.0 is skipped in other words and won’t be released for Android. Mozilla plans to roll out Firefox 64.0.1 slowly to monitor the stability of the new version of Firefox to make sure that it is not impacted according to Sören Hentzschel.
A new entry on Mozilla Wiki confirms that Firefox 64.0 was not shipped for Android and that Mozilla hopes that it can deliver Firefox 64.0.1 this week. The fix is included in Firefox 65.0 Beta already for Android and the plan is to publish Firefox 64.0.1 on December 14th, 2018.
Firefox 64.0.1 won’t be released for desktop operating systems; if a minor update is created, it will likely have the version 64.0.2 instead.
