Microsoft has just announced and released the latest Insider Preview Build – 14251. It includes improvements in Cortana, and an update to the Xbox beta app, and among other little things. More details to follow!

Yesterday, we covered the new Cortana features announced by Microsoft. For the uninitiated, they are 1) more intelligent reminders that work by scanning your email to spot any commitments you may have forgotten about and 2) improved calendar management. Both are excellent features for those of you who are entrenched deep in Microsoft’s productivity ecosystem of emails and calendars.

Well, as expected, these new features can now be played with in the latest Insider Preview Build. It has a build number of 14251, a big numerical jump over the last build we covered – Insider Preview Build 11109. Microsoft has a decent reason for it, too: they previously used different build numbers for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. Now that they’ve combined the codebase for both operating systems, they’ve also synced the build numbers.

What’s New In Insider Preview Build 14251?

New features:

  • Intelligent reminders and improved calendar management in Cortana
  • The new Xbox app (currently in beta). It comes with new or improved features like Gamerscore leaderboards, the ability to see people in a party before joining them, re-arrange pins on the Home screen, and much much more, as detailed in the official blog post [Xbox.com].

Bugfixes for the following issues:

  • Switching certain games from windowed to fullscreen would crash them.
  • Crashes in assistive technologies like Magnifier and Narrator
  • Crashes in File Explorer when DPI was set at 175%

That about covers what’s new in 14251.

Based on our news sources, Microsoft is currently focused on working on the core of Windows 10, and also optimizing internal processes. As a result, the next big update for Windows 10 – know as the Redstone update – will have less new features than previously expected.
