There’s no doubt that Google has put some extra attention towards creating great looking Material Design-inspired wallpapers since Android 5.0 Lollipop was introduced to the world. In a new blog post, Google has now detailed the work that went into creating the new stock wallpapers that come along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, including the painstaking process through which commissioned designer Carl Kleiner puts the abstract pieces together.
Upon first glance, it’s easy to assume that the wallpapers are created digitally, but that’s not the case. Kleiner physically creates the art out of various paper types before it is photographed and makes its way to your phone. From Google:
For the introduction of Material Design, we commissioned Kleiner to create three pieces called “papers capes.” The pieces were constructed out of multiple paper-types, and were released with the Material Design guidelines as well as for the hero image and photographic set for Lollipop and various marketing collateral. This year, we commissioned Kleiner to create a new set for Android Marshmallow, which launched to the public on October 5th. The Marshmallow set plays up subtle shifts in tone and texture instead of relying primarily on bold color shifts. As Kleiner describes it, “We wanted to work with surfaces that have a subtle and sophisticated texture,” Kleiner says, “organic to the touch and graphic in composition…Painted surfaces, color pigment powders, floating ink and the like.”
