Microsoft has just started rolling out April’s cumulative updates for Windows 10. There are two build numbers floating around the web – KB3147458 and KB3147461. Let’s discuss what’s new in each of them, before we show you how to download and install them on your PC.

Windows Update

Monthly updates to Windows 10 tend to roll out in one of the earlier Tuesdays. Last month, Microsoft released cumulative updates KB3140768 and KB3140745 which included a bunch of bug-fixes, security improvements, performance and reliability updates. Nothing major, but a lot of minor changes which add up for a better overall experience. Expect the same from today’s releases.

Update: Microsoft has released cumulative updates KB3156421 & KB3156387. Go download them instead!

What’s New In KB3147458 & KB3147461?

  • Fixes issues related to daylight savings time, lock screen, USB device connectivity, buying apps in Windows Store, Bluetooth connections, shutdown delays, among many others.
  • Greater reliability for your WiFi, Bluetooth, general network connectivity, Internet Explorer 11 and Microsoft Edge, Windows Explorer, Cortana and more.
  • Dual SIM phones running Windows 10 now support visual voicemail
  • Security updates for Edge, IE11, .NET Framework, and other core parts of the Windows 10 OS.

Downloading and installing KB3147458 will push your Windows 10 version number to 10586.218, up from 10586.164 in the previous month. KB3147458 is targeted at users running Windows 10’s Threshold (TH) update released in November 2015 i.e. Windows 10 1511.

The second cumulative update – KB3147461 – targeted at users still on Windows 10’s original release i.e. they never installed the Threshold updates. It includes much of the same solutions.

How To Download KB3147458 & KB3147461?

To manually, force download these updates, launch the Settings app, go to Update & security > Windows Update, and click on Check Update. Windows 10 will then ping Microsoft’s servers to download KB3147458 or KB3147461 for you, depending on which version of Windows 10 you’re on.

Since these are cumulative updates, they include all previous updates so you don’t have to worry about first downloading KB3140768 & KB3140745, for example.

If you prefer, you can download these updates in a standalone package. Again, I don’t understand why you would want to do this but the alternative download option is there for those who you need it.

Note that as of typing, the links on Microsoft’s Support site haven’t gone live. They will in a few minutes. Hang tight!

Wait, Should You Download April’s Cumulative Updates Immediately?

Update: As expected, a minor but appreciable set of users are facing problems with the new update. We’ve discussed them in a separate post on KB3147458 issues.

We think it’s a good idea to wait a day or two before you download these new cumulative updates. Although the vast majority of users never see any issues, a limited but appreciable set of them do often see deal-breaking problems. We’ve seen reports in the past of users being simply unable to use their systems.

Keep an eye here on Windows Clan for the next couple of days. If you don’t see any dedicated KB3147458 & KB3147461 issues related post, consider yourself good to go!
