Qualcomm has revealed the name of its next-generation smartphone processor, the Snapdragon 835. The new chip, due to arrive in devices early next year, has the company’s latest Quick Charge 4.0 technology and is based on a 10nm manufacturing process. The 835 will replace the popular Snapdragon 820/821 as the company’s top-tier mobile processor.
Qualcomm isn’t providing many details on the Snapdragon 835, but it says the new 10nm process it is based on will lead to better performance and improved power efficiency. (The Snapdragon 820 was based on a larger, 14nm process.)
The company is providing a few more details about Quick Charge 4.0, however. The latest generation of Qualcomm’s fast charging technologies, Quick Charge 4.0 is promised to provide faster charging; greater compatibility with various devices, cables, and chargers; and more safety features. Qualcomm’s tagline for it is “5 hours of use from just 5 minutes of charging.” It is 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 3.0.

Unlike Quick Charge 3.0, 4.0 is fully complaint with USB Type-C protocols, including USB Power Delivery, and Qualcomm says it is also compliant with Google’s new specifications for Type-C charging. The spec includes more accurate measurement of voltage, current, and temperature to protect devices and chargers from damage. It also has a new protection against overcharging.
