Share The Sound Output Over A Local Area Network

SpeakerShare is a computer program for systems running Microsoft Windows or Apple OS X that enables you to share the sound output of one computer system over a local area network.

There are not probably a lot of situations where this is necessary but some users might be looking for a program like this.

The program combines the client and server version in one interface and requires Apple’s Bonjour service to be running in the background. Bonjour gets installed with iTunes but can also be installed separately if necessary.

The client version needs to be installed on the target system that you want to play the music on that is streamed over the network by the server version. All that needs to be done on the client system is to select the Share tab in the program interface and click on the share button.

That’s all there needs to be done on the client computer. The server computer needs to be configured from the Use tab in the same program interface. The computer that runs the client should be listed in the interface as a speaker.

You may also need to adjust the mixer device used if multiple mixers are available.

And that’s it. Sound that gets played on the server system should now be audible on the client system as well for as long as both programs are running and the connection can be established on the local area network.

The program’s readme contains additional information and some troubleshooting advice in case something is not working. The sound is buffered before it plays on the client system which results in a one second lag. It should also be noted that the server can handle multiple connected clients. The program can be downloaded for Windows and OS X at the developer’s website.

Update: The original Speaker Share website hosted on Google Code is not available anymore. We have removed the links pointing to the site and uploaded the latest version of Speaker Share to our own servers from where it can be downloaded. Note that while the program may work right now, it is not developed anymore which means that bugs or issues that you may encounter won’t be fixed in the future. Also, we don’t support it in any way.
