Download Manager Tweak is an add-on for the Firefox web browser that improves the browser’s download manager in several ways.

The standard Firefox download manager does not provide many information or options when downloading files. While it displays some information, such as the size of the file, download speed or hostname, it lacks other information such as the full url the file is downloaded from.

That can be a problem for some users who use the default download manager, and not an add-on or third party download manager for Internet downloads.

Not every Firefox user requires these additional information, but those who do need to either use a download manager that connects to Firefox, or a browser extension that pimps the native download manager of the browser.

The download manager extension Download Manager Tweak replaces the default download manager  of Firefox with an advanced version that provides additional functionality and information.

The download manager window displays additional information after installation of the add-on. This includes the source url, local download path and date the download was initiated.

The add-on displays buttons at the top furthermore that enable you to launch a download, open the folder it was saved to, delete a file, ore move individual items from the list.

On the right side of downloads are icons that offer management options. You may stop downloads, or open the folder they are stored in.

A right-click displays options to remove an entry from history, go to the download page, or clear the downloads listing.

You may also press Delete on the keyboard after selecting a download to get a prompt to delete the file, remove it from the list, or perform both operations.

Changing the location

One interesting feature of Download Manager Tweak is the option to display the download manager in different locations. Firefox displays downloads in a window by default, and you may switch from that to a tabbed listing or a sidebar listing.

The options are rich, and display lots of features that improve Firefox’s download manager. Below is a short selection of tweaks provided:

  1. Close the Download Manager automatically when downloads complete.
  2. Limit the number of downloads in the list (default 100 entries).
  3. Limit the number of days to keep downloads in the list (default 30 days).
  4. Add or remove buttons from the toolbar, or the download list.
  5. Load the download manager tab in the foreground or background.
  6. Automatically launch downloads after they complete.
  7. Automatically remove downloads after they complete.

Some options introduce interesting options that Firefox does not offer. You may keep the listing clean for instance by configuring the add-on to delete entries automatically after a number of days.
