Google wants to continue its efforts to expand its Google Fiber TV and 1 Gbps Internet service to more cities. It is now exploring the idea of bringing the service to two big metropolitan areas in the U.S., Chicago and Los Angeles.
LA is the second biggest city in the U.S. with over 3.9 million people and Chicago is third with over 2.7 million residents. Google stated:
As we kick off our usual checklist process, we’ll work closely with city leaders to collect detailed information about each metro area. From Venice Beach to Wrigley Field, we’ll study the different factors that would affect construction—like city infrastructure and topography—and use that information to help us prepare to build a local fiber network.
Google added that even though this early work is taking place, there’s no guarantee that Google Fiber will be launched in Chicago or LA. The service is currently available in Kansas City and Provo, Utah and parts of Austin, Texas, and it is scheduled to be put in place in Salt Lake City, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham and San Antonio. Google is also thinking about adding service to even more cities in the U.S., including San Jose, Irvine and San Diego, California, along with Portland, Oklahoma City, Louisville, Tampa, and Jacksonville.
