Voyage is an add-on for the Firefox web browser that visualizes the web browsing history of the user by drawing connections between destinations.
The Firefox web browser and all other modern browsers store the history of visited websites in databases.
The information is accessible directly in the browser by opening the browsing history, but is also used by the browser, for instance by suggesting previously visited sites when they match typed text in the browser’s address bar.
You can open the browsing history in Firefox with the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-Shift-H, and the suggestions that include it are enabled by default when you type in the address bar of Firefox.
The history function is on the other hand not the most comfortable solution when it comes to looking up information. If you want to know about a site that you visited in the past, you need to know the date, its url or page title to find it efficiently.
If you don’t have those information (sometime last year), you are out of luck most of the time.
Voyage
Voyage is a Firefox add-on that visualizes the browsing history. It starts to record the visited websites and their relation right after installation and can be accessed at anytime by entering about:voyage into the Firefox address bar. The same screen is also accessible from the History > Voyage menu.
Voyage displays each visited website in a circle displaying the website’s favicon in the center. The circle size changes depending on the number of visits to a website so that the most popular destinations can be recognized on first glance.
Hovering the mouse over a circle displays the relations to other circles as the extension draws lines on the screen to visualize them. It furthermore displays a maximum of three page titles of pages that have visited on the domain and the total amount of pages that you have accessed.
A left-click on a circle will open the full list of pages that have been accessed on the domain. Information displayed include the page title, time the resource was accessed and the from and to relations to other circles.
Another interesting option is the Twitter integration of Voyage which allows Twitter users to integrate the last 90 days of Twitter to a maximum of 500 tweets.
Voyage is an interesting Firefox add-on that can be useful for users who would like to have access toh a visual representation of their browsing history. The add-on is compatible with all Firefox 3.5+ versions and can be downloaded directly from the Mozilla Add-on repository.
Update: The add-on has not been updated since 2011. While it is still compatible with Firefox (it installs just fine), some of its functionality may not work anymore. A comparable extension is Lightbeam even though it concentrates more on first and third party server access than the browsing history.
