Honor 7

At a recent Honor event in Berlin we heard about a beta of Marshmallow set to push out soon for the Honor 7, without any word on dates for the rest of the range. Thanks to a tweet from the company’s Indian division we now know that the roll out is set to commence in February 2016.

Folks with an Honor 7 not in the beta will have a few months to wait, then. Also included in the initial rollout will be the Honor 4C, 4X, 6 and 6 Plus. While there’s still a bit of a wait in store, the turnaround is still a big improvement on Huawei’s past efforts at updating its phones to newer versions of Android.

What we also don’t know yet is just what the Chinese manufacturer is going to do on top of Marshmallow. EMUI is a complete reworking of Android with almost zero stock elements left alone and, sadly, some things that just don’t work that well. But, being a Nexus partner now, we can only hope improvements continue to come.

What’s still outstanding is any word on current Huawei branded phones. The Honor sub-brand has been most forthcoming with its plans for Android 6.0 but as yet the main brand has been silent. With rumors abound of another Mate device launching before the end of 2015, who knows exactly what we’ll hear and when.
