Stephen King’s It is still one of the creepiest miniseries to hit television, but judging from this first trailer, this year’s cinematic remake is looking to up the ante. Here, though we never get a long look at the creature known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), we get a sense of the terror he brings to Derry, Maine and the kids who’re trying to stop him.

It stars Skarsgård in the title role, along with Midnight Special star Jaeden Lieberher and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. Helmed by horror director Andrés Muschietti, the film is the first part in a duology that will explore Pennywise’s power over Derry and the Loser Club, the group of kids at the core of the story. Already, Muschietti’s work looks terrifying, stripping out the camp from the 1990 miniseries. Just compare the first few seconds of the trailer to this iconic sequence:

It hits theaters on September 8th.
