Every Game of Thrones death recreated as a beautiful pop-up book

Hannes Sommer, a young Austrian artist with a very cool Instagram account, recently posted a video depicting every major Game of Thrones death in hand-drawn pop-up book form. Though “Every Death” videos are pretty common for popular TV series, and particularly for Game of Thrones, which boasts dozens of major character deaths per season, this one required an impressive amount of work. Plus, it’s actually fun to watch.

Sommer illustrates each major character with a detailed ink drawing, then kills them off with simple, handmade special effects. The video had to be done in one shot, as his book is thoroughly destroyed by the time he’s done. At one point he crushes a tomato in it; at another, he lights it on fire.

Sommer has a pretty good sense of humor about the series, poking fun at the showrunners’ controversial decision to burn pre-teen Shireen Baratheon at the stake — a gory, messed-up scene that hasn’t taken place in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (yet). He also takes a second to tear out a page titled “DORNE PLOT” and throw it away. Good call.

I don’t know about you, but I’m doing the math right now and it seems impossible that the world has to wait another 48 days for the seventh season of Game of Thrones. On the bright side, Watchers on the Wall discovered over the weekend that the season premiere will be 59 minutes long, the longest premiere episode since season one. Does that make up for the wait time? I don’t know, maybe if those extra few minutes are used to reveal some more cool outfits for Sansa Stark.
