Phablets dominated Android activations during the holiday season, according to new numbers released by mobile analytics firm Flurry. Phablets took a total share of 50 percent of all Android activations over the period of December 19 through December 25, beating out medium-sized phones, which held a share of 35 percent.

Meanwhile, small phones came in at just 3 percent while tablets held a share of 10 percent and 2 percent for small and large varieties, respectively. Phablets for the whole mobile market meanwhile, grew to a 27 percent share of activations, which is up from 13 percent in 2014 and 4 percent in 2013.

As for manufacturer totals, Apple took the lead, accounting for 49.1 percent of all device activations. Samsung followed up in second place with 19.8 percent of the share, with Nokia, LG and Xiaomi following 2 percent, 1.7 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.

Flurry’s data is based on monitoring app installs for 780,000 apps total, so the sample size is fairly large. As for screen sizes, Flurry classifies phablets as any phone with a screen size between 5 inches and 6.9 inches, while medium phones land between 3.5 inches and 4.9 inches, with small phones making up anything below 3.5 inches. Given the general trend towards larger phones in the mobile market over the last year or two, the phablet dominance in the Android sphere shouldn’t be all that surprising.
